Spill in Darwin Harbour must be urgently addressed

2016-08-19

The NT Greens are shocked and saddened to hear of the oil spill in Darwin harbour.

Greens candidate for Nightcliff, Matt Haubrick, said: "Although it is too early just now to know exactly what has happened, we are hopeful the damage can be contained and the harbour can be protected.

"It is really sad to hear that our precious living harbour and the dolphins, turtles and dugongs that live in it have been put at risk so carelessly. The CLP have their hands off the wheel and Labor propose a toothless advisory committee.

"The NT Greens have a longstanding commitment to adopt the same strategy of Total Catchment Management that has worked in other jurisdictions.

"A Catchment Authority would regulate the harbour and prevent this sort of avoidable mishap. Incidents like this are a reminder that fossil fuels are dangerous and inefficient and the NT needs to transition to a fully renewable energy economy with haste.

"Our living harbour is a natural gem that is too precious to waste."
