Suki Dorras-Walker Announces Candidacy for Lyons Ward By-Election
Suki Dorras-Walker, a passionate 35-year-old mother of two young children, school teacher, and law student, has officially announced her preselection as the Greens candidate for the upcoming local council by-election in Lyons Ward, Darwin.
With a strong commitment to fostering sustainable growth, transparent governance, and community engagement, Dorras-Walker aims to bring a fresh perspective and a strong voice to Darwin City Council.
Dorras-Walker's experience as a dedicated mother and educator, and her ongoing pursuit of a Law degree has equipped her with the skills to navigate complex issues while championing positive change.
“I love living in Darwin, and I’m excited to be standing for a seat on Darwin City Council because I want to see a movement that is led by the community first and foremost. I am motivated by energising communities, bringing people together and reminding people of their power to effect change” Dorras-Walker said. "Our children deserve a thriving and sustainable environment, and our community deserves a council that is accountable and transparent. I am committed to being that voice and enacting positive change."
Dorras-Walker is a key organiser behind the ongoing Binybara camp at Lee Point which has seen remarkable progress in protecting precious tropical savannah woodland and habitat for endangered species.
“My commitment to the community is evident through my involvement in the Binybara camp at Lee Point. This campaign brought the community together and reminded us that we have enormous power when we work together.”
Dorras-Walker wants to see investment in solutions that are evidence-based and community-led. “I envision initiatives that promote clean energy, waste reduction, the preservation of green spaces, and positive community programs to help alleviate the drivers of inequality. By fostering strong partnerships between local businesses, First Nations leaders, residents, and government bodies, I want to make Darwin a shining example of urban sustainability and community cohesion.”
