Our plan for Alice Springs Town Council

The Alice Springs Town Council will hold elections for eight Councillors and a Mayor on 23 August 2025. 

The NT Greens have the following policy priorities for the Alice Springs Town Council:

Prepare our town for a hotter future.

  • Create a new climate adaptation strategy, including scenarios like bushfires, power blackout, water security and flooding.
  • Maximise the use of solar energy
  • Install a battery at the town pool.
  • Start electrification of the ASTC vehicle fleet, including rubbish trucks.
  • Start development of multi-megawatt scale PV array on ASTC land.

Expand activities for young people.

  • Partner with the NT Government to establish a youth hub on weekend evenings as a crime prevention strategy.

Decrease the cost of the pool and increase the hours of the library.

  • Extend library hours, especially on the weekend.
  • Employ directly or partner with social workers and youth workers to provide support to vulnerable people
  • Expand the items that can be borrowed from the library, like tools and hiking gear, to tackle cost of living.
  • Make the town pool free for children and their carers outside of school hours, and to all residents over the summer.

Protect and improve our parks.

  • No selling off council land.
  • Increase shade and seating
  • Promote native vegetation to support urban biodiversity and water conservation
  • Phase out plastic play equipment
  • Ensure all parks have a drinking fountain
  • Ensure all parks have public toilets with baby-change facilities that are open during daylight hours.

Activate the CBD.

  • Connect empty shopfronts with community initiatives like galleries or workshops
  • More council events in the CBD to bring people to town in the evening.
  • Explore incentives to fill vacant properties.

More footpaths, bike lanes and zebra crossings.

  • Build more and wider footpaths
  • Promote active transport
  • New seating on footpaths and along the river
  • Build more drinking fountains

Get rid of buffel on Council land.

  • Make and implement a plan to eliminate buffel on Council land.
  • Support individuals and organisations to tackle buffel grass on their land.

Address our childcare shortage.

  • Establish a centralised waitlist for all childcare providers in Alice Springs.
  • Establish a council-run childcare centre that provides both long and occasional daycare.

Provide public amenities that meet peoples’ needs.

  • Make sure all public toilets have baby change facilities
  • Make the showers at the ASTC building free
  • Explore options for a public food bank and public landromat.
