Gender Equality and Empowerment

Everyone benefits in societies where all people, regardless of their gender, are equal. Challenging gender inequality means actively dismantling patriarchal supremacy within people and institutions of power.

Principles

The Greens believe:

  1. Intersecting systems of oppression such as colonisation, racism, classism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, ageism and ableism compound the impact of sexism on women and gender diverse people.
  2. Women and gender diverse people have the right to make informed and autonomous choices about all aspects of their lives, including education, health, sexual and gender identity, birthing and child-rearing, and participation in paid work and caring responsibilities.
  3. People of all genders:
    1. have a right to live free from harassment, fear, violence and abuse;
    2. should have equal access to participation in all spheres of public life including political, economic and cultural spaces;
    3. should be represented at all levels of government; and
    4. should have access to safe and confidential health and well-being services, including reproductive health services.
  4. Caring work is critical to a strong society. Contributions to the community in paid and unpaid caring roles should be recognised, and the attitude that caring work is primarily the responsibility of women should be challenged.

Aims

The Greens want:

  1. The rights of all women and gender diverse people to be actively protected and promoted.
  2. Free, accessible, quality and inclusive childcare for all families.
  3. All NT government policies, programs and budgeting to be gender responsive, including approaches to urban planning, transport, housing and the economy.
  4. All public servants to have access to at least 26 weeks of paid parental leave for the primary carer, regardless of gender.
  5. Support for all NT workplaces to be family-friendly, offering flexible working hours and work from home options for all employees, regardless of gender.
  6. Commitment to equal pay for equal work, including action to address underpayment in traditionally female-dominated industries such as childcare, aged care, nursing and teaching.
  7. Support for people who have taken on full-time unpaid caring roles to re-enter education and work if they choose, regardless of their gender.
  8. Provision of greater access to subsidised, flexible educational opportunities and resources for women and gender diverse people facing disadvantage and living in remote communities.

  10. Free menstrual products for all people who menstruate, available across the NT, regardless of remoteness.

  13. Equitable access to free, legal and high quality abortion services, including unbiased counselling.

  15. The establishment and expansion of trans and gender diverse health services.
  16. Increased funding for legal services for women, in particular those that cater to the specific needs of at risk groups such as women experiencing domestic, family or sexual violence.
  17. The meaningful participation of sex workers in the development of law and policies that directly affect their lives and safety.
  18. Increased and permanent funding for services that support women and gender diverse people experiencing discrimination and harassment in the workplace.
