Foreign interference laws

2018-01-24

The Greens share the deep concerns of civil liberties groups and media organisations about the scale and scope of the Government's foreign interference and espionage laws.

"This legislation risks criminalising a wide range of actions which are not only legitimate, but for the common good," Greens Justice spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said.

“These include medical and other academic research and public interest journalism.”

“The legislation is shoddily drafted and too broad in scope, and needs amending to ensure that it properly targets foreign interference in our political system."

"Democracies like Australia must defend academic and media independence.”

"This legislation highlights the need for a Charter of Rights to safeguard some of our most fundamental freedoms, which is why the Greens will continue to push for a Charter in 2018."
