Attorney-General George Brandis has repeatedly failed to answer the central allegation against him in the Bell Act affair, and should resign or at least stand down until the matter is examined at a Senate inquiry.
"By failing to tell the Parliament whether he instructed the former Solicitor-General to not run a particular argument, Senator Brandis has effectively confessed his guilt," Australian Greens Justice spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said.
"He is accused of trying to have the Solicitor-General run dead as part of a political deal with the Western Australian Government. Nothing he has said today refutes that claim."
"Senator Brandis has repeatedly waived legal privilege when it suits him politically. Given the overwhelming public interest in this case, and the vast sums of money involved, he should do so again."
"This matter needs to be examined at a Senate inquiry, although Senator Brandis has thrown so many of his current and former colleagues under a bus it's going to take us a while to work through them."
