The federal government’s censorship of references to Tasmania’s World Heritage listed forests from a United Nations report can’t hide the threats to the area, or Greg Hunt’s negligence, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.
“We have known for some time that global warming and logging are putting a great deal of pressure on Tasmania’s magnificent forests,” Senator McKim said.
“It’s less than six months since unprecedented bushfires tore through forests that have been standing for millennia.”
“The Greens have got news for Greg Hunt – censoring references to Tasmanian forests and the Great Barrier Reef isn’t going to make global warming stop.”
“The Abbott-Turnbull Government was embarrassed in their attempts to remove Tasmanian forests from the World Heritage Area, now they want to pretend the area is not under threat from global warming.”.
Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson Larissa Waters condemned the government from deleting an entire chapter on the Great Barrier Reef.
“The Turnbull Government will stop at nothing to cover up the devastating impact its inaction on global warming is having on our World Heritage Areas like the Great Barrier Reef and our magnificent Tassie Wilderness,” Senator Waters said.
“The solution for saving the Reef and Forests and saving the tourism industry they support are one in the same.“
