Labor’s decision to roll over and give Immigration Minister Peter Dutton power to remove people’s citizenship is as disappointing as it is unsurprising, Greens spokesperson for legal affairs Senator Nick McKim says.
“Labor is in zombie lockstep with the Government in dangerous bipartisanship," Senator McKim said.
“This Bill is not going to address the social exclusion that leads to radicalisation, and may even prove counter-productive in the long term.”
“We continue to have major concerns about the Bill’s retrospective application and the lack of a proper judicial process in removing someone’s citizenship.”
“The Greens will be doing what we can to improve this bill - supporting government amendments and moving amendments of our own.”
“But the amendments do not go nearly far enough to address the massive flaws in this Bill and we will be voting against it.”
