The Australian Greens have committed to funding a comprehensive study into the feasibility of a Tasmanian women’s football side competing in the national competition.
”We want to see a Tasmanian team that plays here, trains here and with a substantial component of local players,” Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim said.
“A Tasmanian team would encourage female participation in sport, and give our athletes a platform to compete at the highest level without having to leave the state.”
“That’s why we are committing $100,000 to a feasibility study into the costs and benefits of setting up a Tasmanian women’s team.”
“Unfortunately, the state government’s inaction and the AFL’s negligence of Tasmania have meant a missed opportunity for the first year of the competition.”
“However, we believe the team could realistically be set up in time for the 2018 season.”
