Media Release: Labor and Liberals vote down immigration detention Royal Commission

2016-08-31

Labor and the Coalition have voted together to reject a Royal Commission into Australia's detention centres including Manus Island and Nauru.
Greens spokesperson for Immigration Nick McKim said the abuse and cover-ups in immigration detention centres, and the government’s failure to adequately respond, needed investigation at the highest possible level.
“The disinfectant of sunlight needs to be shone on Australia’s broken immigration detention network, and there is quite enough evidence that a Royal commission is warranted,” Senator McKim said.
“Labor’s opposition to a Royal Commission is yet another weak display of bipartisanship with the government on immigration detention.”
