Turnbull needs to confront Abe over illegal whaling

2017-01-16

Malcolm Turnbull must confront Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about illegal whaling when the two leaders meet tomorrow, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.

"Prime Minster Turnbull needs to demand an immediate halt to Japan's illegal slaughter of these magnificent marine creatures," Senator McKim said.

"He should also demand the payment of the $1 million in Federal Court fines that Japan owes Australia."

"In opposition, the Liberals promised tough action against illegal whaling, but in government they've been completely missing in action."

"Strong relationships need to be based on mutual respect and honesty, even if that means raising difficult issues."
