Hi, I'm Bill! 

I'm running as your Greens candidate for mayor of Hobart City Council.

I'm a teacher, an environmental educator, and a long-serving community representative.

I've been on the Hobart City Council since 2007, and in that time I've tried to do things differently: focus on outcomes and make decisions based on evidence, not ego. The community deserves elected representatives who actually show up for them – and I intend to keep doing exactly that.

I came to Hobart in 1999 from Malaysia to complete a postgrad in Environmental Management. My partner and I fell in love with the place – its scale, its pace, its singular character – and never left. Hobart doesn't need to be like anywhere else. If anything, everywhere else should want to be more like Hobart.

My values have shaped everything I've done. In the early 2000s I left classroom teaching to run an education for sustainability programme. Today I run a community biochar making programme and chair two conservation-focused boards. I joined the Greens in 2000 because their values – peace, democracy, social justice, a sustainable environment – matched mine exactly. I see myself as a custodian: here for a short time, trying to leave things better than I found them.

The housing and affordability crisis is pushing more and more people to the edge. Hobart needs committed representatives focused on real outcomes – not internal squabbling and petty distractions. We can do better, and I'll keep pushing until we do.
