We all want clean water, a safe climate, and a future where First Nations rights and Country are respected.
But the NSW Labor Government has sided with multinational gas giant Santos to push ahead with the destructive Narrabri Gas Project in the Pilliga Forest, one of the most dangerous fossil fuel projects in the country.
In a devastating move, the Native Title Tribunal has extinguished the land rights of the Gomeroi People so Santos can drill up to 850 coal seam gas wells in the heart of their Country. The Pilliga is the largest inland native forest in eastern Australia, a vital recharge zone for the Great Artesian Basin, and home to threatened species. This decision is a profound betrayal of cultural heritage, environmental integrity, and climate justice.
The Gomeroi People have opposed this project for over a decade. More than 23,000 public submissions were made against it — compared to just 300 in support. Scientists, unions, farmers, and communities have stood together to say no. But Labor has ignored the overwhelming opposition, ignored climate science, and ignored the voices of Traditional Owners.
If it goes ahead, the Narrabri Gas Project will tear through sacred Country, threaten our precious water, and lock in dangerous emissions for decades. Once the Pilliga is fractured, it cannot be undone.
We don’t have to accept this.
We can protect the Pilliga Forest, safeguard the Great Artesian Basin, and uphold Gomeroi land rights. We can build a future powered by clean, community-owned energy - not dirty gas. We can choose climate action, cultural respect, and environmental protection over fossil fuel profits.
But we need our governments to act — and we need thousands of people to demand it.
We call on the Minns Governments to:
- Revoke all approvals for the Narrabri Gas Project
- Ban all new coal seam gas projects
- Uphold Gomeroi land rights and protect sacred Country
- Protect the Pilliga Forest and safeguard the Great Artesian Basin
