Interim results are in for the Greens NSW preselection with more than 2000 members participating in the state-wide ballot to select lead Senate candidates to contest the next Federal election.

Greens NSW Senate Preselection Returning Officer Dylan Griffiths and Greens NSW Convenor Sylvia Hale today thanked members, the candidates, and volunteers.

“We are proud of the three outstanding, intelligent, and articulate candidates who contested this preselection. All brought records of significant achievement and made strong cases for their preselection.

“We are confident that members and supporters throughout the state will be working very hard to ensure David Shoebridge joins Senator Mehreen Faruqi in the federal parliament.”

A total of 2263 members voted to choose the order of candidates for the next Senate ticket.

David Shoebridge topped the count followed by Amanda Cohn, and then Rachael Jacobs

David Shoebridge said, “The Greens is a political movement to advance the needs of people and the planet, not corporate donors or their special interests. I want to thank Greens members for the trust they have shown in me to do this task in the Senate.

“There is so much urgent work to be done on First Nations and Climate Justice, on fairness and equity, and I am excited at the chance to take this work to the Senate.

“With the Federal election date still undecided, I have plenty more to do as a State MP, and will continue this work with passion and commitment.
“This is a great opportunity to add to the Federal team, with colleagues like Adam Bandt, Lidia Thorpe and Mehreen Faruqi, that is already making such a valuable contribution at a National level,” Mr Shoebridge said.

NSW Senator Mehreen Faruqi welcomed the preselection result, “I’ve always been proud of the Greens NSW grassroots preselection process, and I thank all members and candidates for their strong passion and commitment. I look forward to campaigning to elect our next NSW Greens senator and grow the power of our movement to tackle inequality and the climate crisis.”

Australian Greens Parliamentary Leader and MP for Melbourne Adam Bandt said, “David Shoebridge has been a powerful force in the NSW Parliament fighting abuses of power, advocating for drug law reform and representing workers against the Liberal Government’s attacks.

“David has spent his life protecting everyday people against billionaires, big corporations and the politicians that represent them.

“By electing another Greens Senator in NSW, voters can help put the Greens into balance of power so we can force the next government to take action on the climate crisis and make billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share of tax.”

The results of the preselection will be formally presented to the Greens NSW State Delegates Council for endorsement on 20 March 2021.
