Manyana community gets a response on land clearing

2020-04-08

A formal response has been lodged to the petition Greens MP David Shoebridge presented to the NSW Parliament on behalf of the Manyana community seeking a moratorium on clearing for development following the bushfires in their area.

The Planning Minister makes a commitment to look further into the matter, and in particular for a departmental review into the concerns raised by the community. This is not the firm end to land clearing that the community has been demanding but it shows the government is on notice of the very real concerns in the community.

Greens MP David Shoebridge said:

"While the Minister has not adopted the call for a moratorium his commitment to look into the matter further is promising, and we know the local community will keep him to his word on this.

“There is a clear need to revisit decisions allowing clearing following the devastation caused by the fires, and the realisation of just how precious our remaining green spaces are.

"After months of trauma with the fires, and now the ongoing pandemic lockdown, this is a time when we need to be protecting the natural world we all treasure so much.

"We'll keep working with the people of Manyana to protect what matters," Mr Shoebridge said.
