Greyhound Mass Grave at Marsden Park Shows Nothing Has Changed in Greyhound Racing Industry

2018-07-12

Greens NSW MP and Animal Welfare Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC has commented on reports that the RSPCA NSW has uncovered greyhound mass grave at Marsden Park and seized a dozen greyhounds that were severely neglected. Dr Faruqi has said that the fact these incidents are still happening in 2018 shows that nothing has changed in the greyhound racing industry.

Dr Faruqi said: “The images are absolutely gruesome and show the consequences of an industry that treat animals as disposable commodities, to be discarded once they stop turning a profit. The fact that such cruelty is happening in 2018 shows that nothing has changed.

“This incident just shows that the second chance given to the industry was a huge mistake and all the promises they made to end the cruelty lack any kind of credibility.

“This is not yet another bad apple. This is evidence of continued systemic cruelty and disregard for animal welfare. Barely a week goes by without continued deaths on tracks, drugging and animals being put down for entirely treatable injuries. The reality is that animals always suffer when they are used and abused for gambling.

“This is a direct result of the cowardice of Premier Gladys Berejiklian who backflipped on the greyhound racing ban and Labor leader Luke Foley who ran a campaign supporting this terrible industry.

“The Liberal/National Government and the Labor party should stop supporting this gruesome industry and ban the greyhound racing industry once and for all” she concluded.
