International students being scapegoated by the Labor Government, say Greens

2024-04-24

Australian Greens Deputy Leader and Spokesperson for Education, Senator Mehreen Faruqi has reacted to recent revelations that universities are rejecting student applications from entire countries.

Quotes attributable to Senator Mehreen Faruqi:

“International student visa processing has become an unpredictable mess under Labor, who are using international students as a scapegoat for their failures.

“Students from entire countries are being targeted for rejection and this is utterly unfair, harmful and discriminatory.

“Targeting students from certain countries is a blunt, punitive approach that will result in bona fide students missing out simply because of their nationality.

“Students from India, Nepal and Pakistan are particularly impacted which points to the inherent bias in the system the Labor government has put in. Do better, Labor.

“International students pay astronomical fees, yet face biases and discrimination. The Labor government would be better off focusing on making our higher education system fairer and more equitable instead of repeatedly targeting international students for their own policy failures.
