Recall NSW Parliament to fix coal and gas prices

The NSW Greens are ready for a recall of parliament to end the profiteering of multinational fossil fuel corporations by getting a cap on coal and gas prices to help people struggling with the costs of energy.

Greens MP, Sue Higginson, and spokesperson for mining, coal and gas said, “The Greens NSW are calling on the Government and Opposition to get back to work on fixing the war profiteering by coal and gas companies, Matt Kean has already agreed that this needs to happen“.

"The old parties think that their jobs finish in November, but we know that NSW residents are doing it tough in the lead up to the holiday season as electricity prices are being driven sky high by inflation and obscene coal and gas prices."

"Matt Kean has confirmed that a cap on coal prices is needed and will help people with the cost of living. Even if the Federal Government does have the constitutional power to introduce the caps, it’s NSW that has the direct powers to do this without having to foot the bill of unreasonable compensation for the coal companies."

“By throwing Albanese’s request back in his face, Kean is pushing the costs of the coal cap back onto Australian taxpayers instead of using the powers of his own Government. If the NSW Government truly agreed that a cap on coal was in the best interests of residents and the country then we could have this fixed by the end of thisweek."

“We shouldn’t allow these record coal and gas profits to drive Australians into energy poverty when we can take action to help people. A cap on the price of the coal and gas, that is the resource of NSW residents after all, is a fair way to ensure that residents of NSW are being given a fair go."

“We are ready to work with the Federal Government to give NSW energy customers security in accessing affordable power. If the NSW Coalition Government doesn’t care enough about residents to come back to work and fix power prices then they should come out and be honest with the communities that elected them."
