The Greens have thrown their support behind moves to re-purpose approximately $70 Million in unused Opal funds to provide a much-needed boost for walking and cycling infrastructure in NSW.
Kobi Shetty MP and Greens Spokesperson for Active Transport and Sustainable Cities says:
“I’m pleased the government worked collaboratively with The Greens to deliver long-overdue reforms to e-bike regulations, and a major funding boost for walking and cycling infrastructure.
“Around $70 million is sitting unused on unregistered Opal cards. As long as people are given fair warning to reclaim their money, redirecting these funds to improve walking and cycling is a smart, community-focused reform.
“It’s disappointing to see the Opposition attempt to block an additional $70 million for walking and cycling. For years, the former Liberal government poured billions into toll roads like the disastrous WestConnex, while neglecting walking and cycling. This shift begins to correct that imbalance.
“The e-bike reforms will need real investment to succeed — separated cycleways, safe parking, and clear enforcement. These funds will help make that happen.”
