End live sheep export: Labor government must legislate the date in this term

Greens Deputy Leader and Animal Welfare spokesperson Senator Mehreen Faruqi joined animal advocates in Perth where National Cabinet  met, to call on the Government to legislate the date in this term of parliament to end live sheep export.

Senator Faruqi said:

“Labor must announce a swift timeline for the phase out of the cruel live sheep export industry and legislate an end date in this term of parliament. Nothing less will do.

“I was proud to join activists as the PM and his cabinet met to remind Labor of their promise to shut this vile trade down. We will not stop till every last ship of misery is docked for good.

“The MV Bahijah disaster has shown us yet again that neither this industry or its regulators can be trusted on animal welfare. This trade is inherently cruel and the only way to make things better is to shut it down swiftly.

“The hard work of the community has forced Labor to commit to a phase out, but we are still waiting for a plan and a timeline. Labor must keep their promise.

“The phase-out panel’s advice has been sitting with the government for more than 100 days. Labor can’t keep kicking the can down the road. The sheep can’t wait any longer.

“The Labor government must urgently legislate a date to end live export, so the cruelty to sheep can end once and for all”.
