GREENS ANNOUNCE YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AS CANDIDATE FOR ALBURY AHEAD OF THE 2023 NSW STATE ELECTION

2023-01-06

The Albury Greens have announced Eli Davern as their candidate for the seat of Albury ahead of the 2023 NSW election.

The Greens campaign for Albury will be officially launched on the 19th of January by Legislative Council candidates Dr Amanda Cohn, former Deputy Mayor of Albury, and Lynda-June Coe, Wiradjuri and Badu Island educator and activist from Cowra.

A former Youth Mayor of Albury and 2022 Young Citizen of the Year, Eli has been a passionate advocate for the Albury community, in particular on mental health, climate action and promoting the role of young people.

In the 2022 Federal election, Eli stood for the seat of Farrer, challenging Deputy Liberal Leader Sussan Ley and receiving a record high vote for the Greens.

The Greens have highlighted housing, health care and tackling the climate crisis as key election issues for Albury.

Quotes attributable to Eli Davern:

“Our community is suffering from growing inequality, skyrocketing housing costs and the climate crisis continues to wreak havoc on our state.”

“These are issues felt most acutely by young people, but they touch the lives of every person in this electorate.”

“Albury is a wonderful community, but our voices aren’t heard by decision-makers in Sydney. A vote for the Greens sends a powerful message that it’s time for real change.”

Current polling indicates Dr Cohn is likely to be elected to the Legislative Council, making history as the first Greens member of parliament based in the region. She is embarking on a tour of regional NSW to discuss rural health care reform.

Quotes attributable to Dr Amanda Cohn:

“Our public health care system needs more than a band-aid. I’m excited to have the opportunity to share the voices of our battling health workers and communities that deserve equal access to health services.”

“I worked directly with Eli when he was Youth Mayor of Albury and was consistently impressed with his passion and his capability to drive change. I’m proud to stand with Eli and offer our community a real alternative to politics-as-usual.”
