Abyan’s return welcomed but an independent advocate must be appointed

2015-10-28

The Australian Greens have welcomed the transfer of Abyan back to Australia so that she can undergo the termination that she has consistently asked for and have called for an independent advocate to be with her at all times while she is here.
"My thoughts are with Abyan at this incredibly difficult time," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"This poor young woman has been through an unbelievable ordeal and it's time she was given the support that she needs.
"By appointing an independent advocate, we can be confident that there will always be someone with Abyan who is acting in her best interests.
"This young woman asked us for help in putting her life back together and we failed her.
"It has taken far too long to get to this point, but I am glad that Abyan will finally get the care that she requires."
