BP drilling decision delayed, should be rejected

2016-09-19

The national regulating body NOPSEMA's decision to delay its decision relating to BP's application to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight by 10 days is a welcome decision and should foreshadow a final, negative decision, the Australian Greens have said.
"What's needed now is a final rejection of BP's disastrous plan," South Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"This decision will have an impact on generations of Australians and should not be rushed.
"The company that oversaw the Gulf of Mexico spill should not be allowed to drill for oil in the nationally significant Great Australian Bight.
"Local industries, traditional owners and community groups are united in their opposition to this disastrous proposal.
"NOPSEMA should read the writing on the wall and listen to the local community that is clearly saying that BP are not welcome here."
