Commercial research model has major flaws: Greens

2015-11-16

The Australian Greens have warned the Government against incentivising and prioritising university research for commercial ventures.

"The current funding system is certainly problematic, but suggestions that research should be linked to commercial imperative, expose this government's warped priorities for the sector," the Greens spokesperson on Higher Education, Senator Robert Simms said.

"The Government has to be careful not to undermine the academic integrity of our universities and see them co-opted by big corporates. We also don't want important research being sidelined because it may not immediately have commercial value.

"If Prime Minister Turnbull is serious about boosting research he should start with reversing the cuts of his predecessor. Putting more money into Universities, now that really would be innovative!"
