Australian Greens Senator for South Australia Robert Simms is calling on the Federal and South Australian governments to assist the mid-north of this state in transitioning to a clean energy future, providing jobs and security for the region, following the announcement that more than 1100 jobs are at risk in Whyalla.
"Towns in the mid-north like Whyalla and Port Augusta are on their knees. They need a plan that doesn't tether them to volatile world markets so if an industry like the Arrium steel works, or the Port Augusta power station, faces closure, the towns can still thrive," Senator Simms said.
"Renewable technology can bring 21st century jobs to regional South Australia, to help guarantee its economy and longevity. Green jobs in solar thermal, advanced manufacturing and electric cars would not only benefit our environment but would give the South Australian jobs market the boost it so desperately needs.
"The cash windfall spruiked in the interim report from the Royal Commission is pure fantasy and fails to adequately consider the fact that making SA the world's largest nuclear waste dump would be a costly and dangerous burden for future generations.
"People living in regional South Australia should not have to live next door to a toxic waste dump simply to prop up the state's finances when there are safe alternatives like a solar thermal plant delivering clean, green energy. "
