Greens call on NOPSEMA to reject BP's drilling application

The Australian Greens have called on NOPSEMA to reject BP's application to drill for oil in a marine park and sanctuary for whales.

NOPSEMA have extended the time they will take to make a decision on BP's application, but Greens Senator for South Australia, Robert Simms, said the project is a disaster in waiting and must not be given the green light.

"This decision is merely a stay of execution for BP. What we really need is for NOPSEMA to take a stand and say this sort of project has no place in the Great Australian Bight," Senator Simms said.

"BP is looking to drill for oil in a marine park and a sanctuary for whales. It is entirely inappropriate for a company with BP's record to drill in such an important region - one that contributes more than $442 million to the South Australian fishing industry.

"BP has not released critical information such as their Environmental Plan, nor their oil spill modelling, nor their oil spill emergency plan. This is a chance for BP to go back to the drawing board, reassess the future of this project and hopefully make a gracious exit."
