Adelaide's Frome Street Bikeway would finally be extended to the River Torrens, under a Greens plan to invest more than half a billion dollars in public transport and cycling infrastructure in South Australia.
Greens Senator for South Australia Robert Simms said the Greens would allocate $18 million to fund the completion of the Frome Street Bikeway. "It's time to end the Frome Street Bikeway saga and see a clear commitment from government to extend the separated bikeway up to the River Torrens," said Senator Simms.
"For a city that prides itself on its annual celebration of cycling with the Tour Down Under, we invest very little in cycling infrastructure, amounting to less than $3 per person.
"This plan would also boost cycling infrastructure outside of the CBD. South Australians deserve investment in transport options that will fix our increasing traffic congestion and reduce pollution.
"The Greens' active transport funding plan would see key South Australian cycling projects created, and existing ones extended or completed," said Senator Simms.
Under the Greens' plan, South Australia would see around $70 million invested into improving bikeways and cycling infrastructure, including funding for:- Completion of Adelaide's Frome Street Bikeway to the River Torrens, $18 million- East-West cycling corridor along Waymouth Street (fully separated bike lanes as per Frome Street), $6 million- Stage 4 of the Amy Gillett Bikeway through the Adelaide Hills (Mount Torrens to Birdwood), $2.6 million
The Greens' ten-year commitment for public transport will also boost priority projects still awaiting federal funding contributions, including $500 million for the AdeLINK tram network.
"The popularity of Adelaide's newly extended tramlines has been testament to the value of investing in trams as a public transport option," said Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.
"To see our Adelaide tram network further expanded makes sense for communities, the environment, and productivity."
Yesterday the Greens announced a dedicated $10 billion funding allocation over four years to prioritise public transport and active transport options across the nation.
