Greens Senator for South Australia Sarah Hanson-Young had the honour of welcoming and congratulating almost 100 new citizens at the Mitcham Australia Day citizenship ceremony today.
"The people becoming citizens today are committing to making a positive contribution to their new home country and I'm honoured to welcome them," Senator Hanson-Young said.
"We thank them for choosing to call Australia home and for the richness multiculturalism brings our nation.
"While some today will choose to hide behind the Australian flag as a form of nationalist extremism, those taking part in today's ceremony are embracing our inclusive culture, excited to now officially be Australian citizens.
"No matter which country a person is born in, what their religion is or the colour of their skin may be, they will always be welcome in the Australia I call home."
The Mitcham Australia Day ceremony took place at Carrick Hill at 9am.
