South Australians will not stand for the Government encouraging oil and gas exploration in our pristine marine environment and will continue to fight against drilling in the Great Australian Bight until it is fully protected, the Australian Greens say.
“The Minister needs to read the room here and realise that not only is there massive community opposition to drilling in the Great Australian Bight, but oil and gas companies are bowing out one by one because they realise it’s too difficult am there is no social license to do so,” Greens Senator for South Australia Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“These multinational companies are walking away from their exploration plans. It’s unsafe for the workers, for the environment and for the community and not worth the risk. Companies like Chevron and BP can’t be trusted as corporate citizens or environmentally aware, so it beggars belief why the Government is trying to woo companies like this back to our coastline.
“The Resources Minister is still backing the wrong horse in Adani and believes if he opens up a bit more of the sea floor to oil and gas companies they’ll come back, tails wagging.
“The Greens will always stand with the community to fight any moves to drill for oil and gas in the Bight. ”
