Australian Greens Senator for South Australia, Robert Simms, has decried the lack of funding for electric vehicles in South Australia as a wasted opportunity in the government's innovation statement today.
"The Turnbull Government's lack of funding in today's innovation statement for electric vehicles and green cars is a huge oversight," Senator Simms said.
"The electric and sustainable car industry is set to be worth upwards of $500 billion globally by 2025, and government support would help propel Australia as a key player.
"Australia would be perfectly positioned to take advantage of these opportunities. We've got huge skills in our manufacturing industry and we need to be looking at how we can harness them.
"The first bill I introduced into the Senate was a bill that would ensure funding for electric vehicles and green car manufacturing here in South Australia. I recently met with representatives of the electric vehicle industry here in SA and I believe that the ingredients are right for a thriving electric vehicle industry. Today's announcement was a missed opportunity for the sector."
