Labor’s refusal to reduce the amount of money going to overfunded private schools and reinvest it into the public schools that need it most is putting true needs based funding at risk, the Australian Greens have said.
“Labor’s obsession with defending the fistfuls of cash going to private schools is threatening to derail any chance we have at achieving genuine needs based funding for all Australian students,” the Greens’ education spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“The sad thing about all of this is that, if those overfunded private schools don’t take a haircut, it’s the public school students that will miss out.
“As the arguments over schools funding ramp up next year, it’s disappointing to see that Labor will be out defending the status-quo, where limited public money is given to the wealthiest private schools in the country.
“There was a time when the Labor Party supported everyday Australian families, but those days are over. Form their stance on the wealthiest private schools, it’s clear the modern day Labor Party don’t care about regular families and their children anymore.
“The Liberal Party want to cut billions of dollars from public education and now we have the Labor Party running a protection racket for the wealthiest private schools in the country. I fear for the future of our public schools around the country and the millions of students who rely on them to get a decent education.”
