Leyonhjelm, Hanson childcare comments rule them out of reasonable debate

Senators David Leyonhjelm and Pauline Hanson have shown that they’re not up to taking part in a constructive discussion around reforming Australia’s childcare sector with ill-informed comments equating early childhood education with ‘wiping noses’, the Australian Greens have said.

“Senator Leyonhjelm clearly has no understanding of the early childhood education sector or the needs of Australian parents,” the Greens’ education spokesperson, Senator Hanson-Young said.

“Senator Leyonhjelm has a painfully simplistic view of the universe; childcare means wiping kids’ noses and being a politician means ignoring the evidence when talking about education, climate change and gun control.

“It’s no surprise that his comments have been endorsed by that authority on all things mindless and inane, Pauline Hanson.

“With childcare fees sky-rocketing under the Turnbull Government, we need genuine reform and an injection of funds to the sector, not ill-informed comments from fringe lunatics.

“The Greens know that families are doing it tough and understand the importance of early childhood education. We will work in the Parliament to give Australian children the best possible start in life and will stand with childcare workers who have been underappreciated and overlooked for far too long.”
