Lord Mayor should attend Climate Conference: Greens

2015-10-27

Greens Senator and former Adelaide City Councillor Robert Simms says his former Council colleagues should back the Lord Mayor's participation in a UN Climate Conference in Paris.

"This is an exciting opportunity to really cement Adelaide's status as a leader in sustainability on a global scale," said Senator Simms.

The Lord Mayor has come under fire from some Councillors who have suggested he should remain in Adelaide for Council's annual Christmas party.

"It would be completely absurd for the Lord Mayor to be grounded by the City Council just so that he can attend a Christmas party. Indeed, I think South Australians would be horrified if Adelaide missed out on this rare chance to have a seat at the table in Paris and the city would be an international laughing stock."

"The great thing about Christmas is it's an annual thing. This UN Climate Conference however really is a once in a life time gig. It's vital that the Lord Mayor attend."

Senator Simms was a strong advocate for Adelaide City council placing more focus on Climate Change and successfully advocated for $1 million for a Greener Streets program in this year's Council budget.
