Nation ‘misty-eyed’ as Omid declared dead

2016-04-29

The Australian Greens have expressed their condolences to the friends, family and wife of a young man named Omid who has died after self-immolating on Nauru.
"Today my thoughts are with Omid's family, his friends and his grieving wife Nana," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"Sadly, Omid is yet another victim of the cruel detention camps on Manus Island and Nauru, which are a strain on our national conscience.
"There is a better way, but it will take political courage and leadership that is sorely lacking from the Liberal and Labor Parties.
"The Prime Minister's cruel language, saying we should not be 'misty-eyed' about Omid's fate, has no place in this debate.
"Quite rightly, today many Australians will be deeply saddened when they think of this young man that our nation failed to help."
