Nationals MP’s offensive marriage equality comments must be condemned: Australian Greens

2016-02-12

Australian Greens marriage equality spokesperson Robert Simms says Nationals MP Andrew Broad's comments linking rams "mounting each other" in a paddock to same sex relationships must condemned by the new leader of his party.
"There seems to be a bit of a habit on the conservative side of politics for bringing these absurd and shameful comments into the debate. They really are scraping at the bottom of the barrel," Senator Simms said.
"Mr Broad's comments will come as a test for new Nationals Leader Barnaby Joyce, and reveal what kind of an agenda the party would pursue under his leadership. He should move to distance himself from these comments.
"The ram remarks would be hurtful for young LGBTI people to hear. This shows a flaw in holding a plebiscite on marriage equality, which could unleash the mother of all fear campaigns against LGBTI people."
