Nauru mother and baby critical

2016-05-13

Following an emergency medical evacuation after a caesarean birth, all families including women and children on Nauru need to be brought back to Australia, the Australian Greens have said.
"This woman was sent to Nauru against her will and now she and her baby are in a critical condition," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"Once the rules were changed and complex pregnancies were kept on Nauru, doctors knew it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
"The government insisted on these dangerous practices and now they are having disastrous results.
"The Immigration Minister clearly isn't fit to be deciding where and how vulnerable women have their babies.
"Once again we have bureaucrats ignoring doctors' advice and not acting in the best interests of the people in their care.
"This needs to come to an end and all families, including women and children, in the Nauru camp need to be brought to Australia immediately."
