The Australian Greens’ dissenting report to the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties inquiry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) clearly states that the government should immediately give up on any plans to ratify this monster of a deal.
“This deal is done and dusted. It should be consigned to the dustbin of history, where it belongs,” the Green’s finance and trade spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“If the TPP has taught us anything it’s that regular, everyday Australians won’t put up with this archaic sham of a negotiating process anymore.
“The days of doing deals behind closed doors, solely in the interests of big business, are over.
“The solution is not to become anti-trade, isolationist conservatives. It is to change the way that these deals are done so that people, not corporations, are put at the centre of future agreements.
“Driving up the costs of cancer drugs and allowing multi-national corporations to sue the Australian Government was going to be an absolute disaster for the Australian people and that’s why the TPP was comprehensively rejected.
“Labor and the Liberals must now rule out introducing or voting on any form of implementing legislation in the new year.
“Too many years have been taken up with this disaster of a deal. It’s time to move on and reform the treaty negotiating process to make sure that we never find ourselves in this mess again.”
