Removing bans on nuclear industry senseless and short-sighted: Australian Greens

2016-02-17

Australian Greens Senator for South Australia Robert Simms has slammed Family First Senator Bob Day's suggestion that federal laws preventing the expansion of the nuclear industry be removed.
"Senator Day's suggestion that we remove federal bans on the nuclear industry is senseless and short sighted. Removing these kind of safeguards would clearly not be looking out for our home state of South Australia," Senator Simms said.
"The cash windfall spruiked in the interim report from the Royal Commission is pure fantasy and fails to adequately consider the fact that making SA the world's largest nuclear waste dump would be a costly and dangerous burden for future generations.
"The Greens stand with concerned South Australians against this brazen push to embrace the nuclear industry which would forever tarnish our clean green image. We are focused on building a sustainable future, shifting South Australia's economy into the 21st century by focusing on renewables - not a nuclear industry that flat-lined last century."
