Second self-immolation as tragedy unfolds on Nauru

2016-05-03

A young Somali woman who set herself on fire on Nauru was driven to despair after being forcibly returned to Nauru just days ago, the Australian Greens have said.
"There is a tragedy unfolding on Nauru and we can't just stand by and watch," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"This young woman has been driven to despair by her treatment on the island and Malcolm Turnbull needs to intervene.
"The situation on Nauru is spiralling dangerously out of control.
"Malcom Turnbull must show these people some decency and give them hope because the brutality of this policy is killing people.
"I refuse to accept that this is the best we can do. There are not just the two options of dangerous boat journeys or people burning themselves to death.
"There is a better way, where we process people's claims for asylum where they are and then bring them to Australia safely."
