The Senate has supported an Australian Greens’ motion calling on the Federal Government to use Whyalla steel in local infrastructure projects announced in this year’s budget.
“This motion sends a message to the steelworkers in Whyalla doing it tough that Canberra is watching and the Greens are determined to do what we can to help get them back on their feet,” Greens trade spokesperson, Senator for South Australia Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“Using Whyalla-made steel in Australian infrastructure gives much-needed support to South Australia’s steel industry now and into the future. While the people of Whyalla wait on a knife’s edge waiting for details of a new buyer, they’re seeking certainty that the steel industry will continue in the region for the long term.
“This motion mandates the use of Australian-made steel in railway projects announced in the budget, acknowledging that the people of Whyalla are doing it tough. It’s disappointing yet unsurprising that the Government, that pursues free trade agreements that make local procurement very difficult, did not join the Greens and Labor in backing Whyalla steelworkers.
“The people of Whyalla need genuine backing from a Government that wants to spend big on infrastructure – not be tricked into relying on false hopes and empty promises from Adani.
“I would love to see South Australian steel being used to build the nation’s growing rail network.”
