The Australian Government should immediately end all moves towards ratifying the Trans Pacific-Partnership Agreement (TPP) in light of Donald Trump being elected as the president of the United States, the Australian Greens have said.
“The Trans-Pacific Partnership is dead,” Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“It would be extremely foolish to continue down the path towards any form of enabling legislation or ratification of the TPP in Australia, considering the circumstances.
“This disaster of a deal was going to give international businesses the power to sue the Australian Government and drive up the cost of cancer medication.”
Senator Hanson-Young will lodge the following notice of motion in the Senate today, for vote on Monday 21 November 2016.
I move that the Senate:
Calls on the Turnbull Government to abandon moves to implement the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), given that Donald Trump has been elected President of the United States of America.
“The writing is on the wall for the TPP and it’s high time that this sorry chapter was brought to a close,” Senator Hanson-Young said.
