Turnbull government must heed UN criticism in case of ‘Abyan’, raped on Nauru

2015-10-28

Following criticism from the United Nations the Turnbull government must take action and provide 'Abyan', the young woman who needs an abortion after she was raped on Nauru, with appropriate medical care.
"The Turnbull government has treated this poor young woman in an appalling way. It's high time she was given the care that she needs," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"Abyan came to us seeking asylum and a better life. In response, we shipped her off to a tiny Pacific island where she was assaulted and left with no one to care for her.
"Time is running out for Abyan and this strong rebuke from the United Nations makes it clear that the rest of the world is watching.
"As a caring nation we should be offering Abyan a chance to rebuild her life, not condemning her to face poverty and ongoing abuse on Nauru."
