Trade agreements should be negotiated to advantage people, not major corporations, the Australian Greens have said following Malcolm Turnbull’s announcement that future deals will have winners and losers.
“In recent years, deal after deal has been negotiated with big corporations being the only winners,” the Greens’ Finance and Trade spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“When big business wins, regular everyday Australians lose out.
“The Trans-Pacific Partnership was a disastrous deal that should never have progressed as far as it did. The Senate will vote on a Greens’ motion on Monday that will hopefully be the last nail in the coffin for the TPP.
“Australia’s trade deficit has been growing at an alarming rate and, last year alone, was a staggering $35 billion.
“It’s time trade deals were negotiated out in the open, not behind closed doors. That way we can make sure that they’re designed to help people, not just big business and multi-national corporations.”
