Greens Senator Robert Simms has called for federal government funds to improve South Australia's cycling infrastructure, as the state once again hosts the Tour Down Under.
"South Australia is hosting the Tour Down Under yet we continue to lag behind with second-rate cycling infrastructure," South Australian Greens Senator, Robert Simms said.
"Despite hosting this international event, we spend less than any other state per capita on cycling infrastructure, amounting to less $3 per person. This is a sad indictment on our image as a world class cycling destination. It's time for the Federal Government to provide support to improve our cycling infrastructure."
Senator Simms made the call for funding, while the future of the Frome Street Bikeway is still in doubt in the City of Adelaide.
"I understand the City Council are looking at extending separated cycling infrastructure throughout the city. Federal government funds would certainly help get this project moving."
"Malcolm Turnbull has flagged integrated transport planning is on his agenda. It is time for him to put his money where his mouth is and include specified money for cycling infrastructure in his next budget. A great place to start would be to appoint a new Minister for Cities and the Built Environment to replace Jamie Briggs," said the Australian Greens transport spokesperson Senator Janet Rice.
