The Greens recognise that all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ+) South Australians have the right to be free from discrimination, have autonomy over their bodies, and access to holistic and comprehensive health services. The Greens will support LGBTIQ+ people and their families to ensure they are treated equally and free from discrimination.
The Greens will:
- Ensure gender affirming healthcare is accessible for all gender diverse South Australians
- Expand SHINE services across the state and ensure sexual health clinics are appropriately resourced and easily accessible
- Implement policies to combat homophobia and transphobia in schools and support LGBTIQ+ health and wellbeing
- Legislate to remove religious exemptions to anti-discrimination laws to prevent discrimination against LGBTIQ+ South Australians in education, health and public services
- Legislate to allow same-sex parents to have their status appropriately recognised on their child’s birth certificate
- Legislate for a Human Rights Act to protect the rights of all South Australians, including the LGBTIQ+ community
- Make PrEP free to further the goal of eliminating HIV in South Australia
- Ensure ongoing funding for community led LGBTIQ+ advocacy and community services
Explore our Plan
- Ensure gender affirming healthcare is accessible for all gender diverse South Australians
-
Gender affirming medical care, including access to surgical procedures, prescribed hormones, products and services to achieve authentic gender identity and expression, should be provided at no out of pocket costs. It should be accessible and timely for all, regardless of where they are at in their gender affirmation journey.
According to the 2025 State of Pride in South Australia, South Australian Rainbow Advocacy Alliance, there has been some improvement in gender affirming health care access since SA Health released the Statewide Gender Diversity Model of Care (September 2023), however the implementation remains incomplete and substantial barriers to care remain.
We will continue to hold the government to account on the roll out of the Statewide Gender Diversity Model of Care and to ensure that the service model meets the needs of all gender diverse South Australians. - Expand SHINE services across the state and ensure sexual health clinics are appropriately resourced and easily accessible
-
SHINE SA provides a vital service, supporting the sexual health of all people from diverse cultures, sexual orientations, genders, sexes and abilities. The Greens will advocate to increase funding to appropriately resource SHINE SA. This will see greater investment in prevention programs, having a greater positive impact at reducing the number of people seeking treatment for STIs and unplanned pregnancies further up the health system. Through vital education and training programs SHINE SA are building the capacity of the broader health sector to address sexual and reproductive health needs of our community.
- Implement policies to combat homophobia and transphobia in schools and support LGBTIQ+ health and wellbeing
-
LGBTIQ+ young people are less likely to feel safe and included in school where homophobia and transphobia has not been addressed. Schools and students need to be part of the social and cultural change needed to celebrate LGBTIQ+ students in a respectful school environment.
Victoria has taken steps to do just that. Schools must support students by taking reasonable steps to eliminate discrimination based on sex, gender and sexuality. We are calling for SA to do the same. We want every South Australian school to be a safe and respectful environment for all children and young people.
- Legislate to remove religious exemptions to anti-discrimination laws to prevent discrimination against LGBTIQ+ South Australians in education, health and public services
-
All South Australians should be equal before the law, yet exemptions to the state’s equal opportunity laws allow religious based organisations to deny LGBTIQ+ people employment opportunities or access to key services. These exemptions apply in education, health and community service settings.
The Greens are committed to ending this discrimination and will reintroduce a bill before state parliament to abolish religious exemptions.
-
Legislate to allow same-sex parents to have their status appropriately recognised on their child’s birth certificate
-
In South Australia, same-sex parents are not appropriately recognised as parents on their child’s birth certificate. This is troubling for many same-sex partners who want to have their status as a parent appropriately documented. For example, where both parents are mothers, the law requires the birth parent to be listed as mother and her same-sex partner listed as co-parent.
If the child were to be born in the Australian Capital Territory or Western Australia then the birth registration process allows for the registration of same-sex parents on their child's birth certificate, providing them with the option of describing each parent as a mother or a parent. - Legislate for a Human Rights Act to protect the rights of all South Australians, including the LGBTIQ+ community
-
People should be at the heart of government decision making. By adopting a Human Rights Act in South Australia, we will be advancing a framework that sets out the fundamental universal rights that should be awarded to all South Australians. No matter your gender, sex, religion, age, abilities or ethnicity, everyone should be afforded the same rights, free from discrimination and inequality.
The Greens will introduce a bill to establish a Human Rights Act for South Australia. - Make PrEP free to further the goal of eliminating HIV in South Australia
-
The Greens are committed to furthering the goal of eliminating HIV by making PrEP free to all South Australians who are at increased risk of contracting HIV. This effective anti-viral can be taken by someone who does not have HIV to significantly lower their chance of contracting HIV.
-
Ensure ongoing funding for community led LGBTIQ+ advocacy and community services
-
According to the 2025 State of Pride in South Australia, South Australian Rainbow Advocacy Alliance:
Three-quarters of LGBTIQ+ initiatives are unfunded or underfunded, with most operating on an annual budget of less than $25,000. Reliance on short-term non-recurrent funding forces reactive planning and prevents long-term impact.
The Greens recognise that this expertise is vital to the sector and we are committed to advocating for the development of a funding model that supports sector growth, investment and stability in the funding to LGBTIQ+ advocacy.
