Homes don't need to come at the expense of the environment.
As the bush capital of Australia, we have a responsibility to lead the nation in the fight against climate change and protect our natural environment.
But construction on the edges of our city has pushed many native ecosystems into increasingly precarious situations. In a climate and biodiversity crisis, ACT Labor must stop paving over habitat for new suburbs.
Canberra deserves better - we deserve more than piecemeal protections for our environment. At the moment, Canberra has a growing list of 72 threatened species which will only get bigger if we don't take action now.
With Greens in the balance of power we have secured protections for key ecological areas such as Bluetts Block. We have pushed Labor to agree to set an urban growth boundary and ensure homes don't come at the expense of our local environment. Our plan will make Canberra a great place to live - for both people and animals.
But to go further and faster in this biodiversity and climate crisis, we need your help.
Already this year the ACT Labor Government has chosen vested interests over protecting nature by:
- Siding with development over protecting ecologically vital grasslands, like Ainslie Volcanics
- Let the Federal Labor Government approve a development which will push the Canberra Earless Dragon closer to extinction
- Shelved plans to re-naturalise Sullivans Creek
- Backflipped on the target to phase out woodfire heaters by 2045
- Reduced funding for environmental waterways management
- Has not funded Healthy Waterways projects to be completed
- Has not provided any extra support for land carers and volunteers despite these cuts and backflips
That's why we need your help - sign the petition and back the calls for Labor to genuinely care about our planet.
