Australia needs real leadership ON fighting climate change and protecting our environment.
THE GREENS WILL:
- Pick up the pace on delivering equitable climate action so that we reach net-zero emissions faster in a fairer way, supporting those who need it most
- Make sure no one is left behind in the transition to a fully sustainable city, fully funding gas to electric upgrades for 5000 of the lowest income households in Canberra
- Deliver pilot projects to convert and upgrade apartment complexes to become all electric so that Canberrans living in high-rises can feel the benefits of affordable, renewable energy
- Establish a 'Bush Capital Restoration Fund' which will guarantee long-term funding to restore all of Canberra’s environment
- Real and practical outcomes like building land bridges, reintroducing long lost species, reinvigorating degraded habitat across the city and eradicating invasive species.
- Collaboration with traditional custodians to embed their culture, knowledge and expertise into environmental restoration to protect where we live, the water we drink, and our native ecosystems
- Expand our reserve system and reintegrate the environment into our suburbs through city-wide environmental restoration projects
- Stop building on the outskirts of the city, expanding our reserves and building new homes in harmony with the natural environment so that we can best protect endangered habitat.
- Restoration projects that sew the environment and suburbs back together all across Canberra so that we take a holistic approach to environmental protection
in a climate crisis, you need A climate leader.
THE ACT GREENS HAVE BEEN LEADING THE COUNTRY IN CLIMATE ACTION FOR YEARS. WE'VE GOT A PLAN TO KEEP THE PRESSURE, AND PICK UP THE PACE
Already with ACT Greens in Parliament, we have:
- Made the ACT the first state or territory in the country to be powered by 100% renewable electricity
- Reduced emissions by 40% on 1990 levels, with a legislated target for net zero emissions by 2045
- Increased the minimum energy efficiency rating for buildings, reducing reliance on electric heating
- Established nation-leading incentives to drive the switch to emissions-free cars and vehicles
- Boosted electrification efforts by prohibiting all new gas connections across Canberra
OUR ENVIRONMENT IS UNDER THREAT LIKE NEVER BEFORE...
Canberra is different to the rest of the country. We’re progressive, we look after each other, and we take action on the issues that matter.
As the bush capital of Australia, we have a responsibility to lead the nation in fighting climate change and protecting our environment.
But at the moment, Canberra is home to a growing list of 72 threatened species which will only get bigger without drastic action.
For years, governments have only injected enough people money to starve off environmental collapse, but not enough to regenerate and restore habitat.
That's why the Greens will create a 'Bush Capital Restoration Fund' to support long-term, ambitious and science-led projects which don’t just protect our environment, but which actively restore and reconstruct long lost native habitat.
The Greens will make sure we look at the BIG PICTURE, meaning we will restore degraded habitat across Canberra in way that will sew the environment back together, integrated within our suburbs.
