Shane Rattenbury Member of the Legislative Assembly, Leader of the ACT Greens

Shane Rattenbury MLA is seeking an Adviser to work on EITHER housing or health policy in the ACT Legislative Assembly. This position will work primarily on either the housing or health portfolio. Another adviser will work on the other portfolio.
 

Duties

Reporting to the Mr Rattenbury, the Adviser will provide high-level policy, analytical and strategic political advice.  Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Driving the ACT Greens Housing OR Health policy, providing advice, developing and working with the community to advance priority advocacy projects;
  • Critically analysing and reviewing complex policy issues;
  • Working with and assisting other advisers in their roles on more complex issues;
  • Working closely with other policy advisers, media advisers and the Chief of Staff to support and provide input into longer term planning, strategy development, and policy review for the Green MLA team;
  • Assisting with issues management and preparation for Assembly sitting periods, including legislation, motions, Private Member’s Business, speech writing, responding to motions from other parties, and other Legislative Assembly business;
  • Reviewing material and advising the MLA for Assembly committee inquiries and reports;
  • Fostering and developing relationships with the community and other stakeholders and assisting with committee, assembly, electorate and constituent activities;
  • Assisting with content for communications and media inquiries;
  • Applying a demonstrated commitment, or willingness, to implement ACT Greens principles and policies around ecological sustainability, social justice, peace and non-violence and grassroots participatory democracy;
  • Commitment to working in, and contributing to, a positive team culture; and
  • Other duties as directed.

Selection criteria

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience or deep interest in EITHER housing OR health policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate policy ideas into actions/outcomes.
  • Excellent research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written, oral, relationship management and relationship building skills.
  • Capacity to work independently, meet deadlines and work under pressure.

Desirable

  • Experience in or ability to learn about parliamentary systems, ACT legislation and ACT politics.
  • Experience in a parliamentary or public service role.
  • Experience in Economics and/or skills in data analysis.
  • Experience or affinity with the community sector or campaigns sector.

The role will be for the term of the 11th Assembly, Full Time at Adviser Level 1 depending on experience, plus superannuation. Part time arrangements at Adviser Level 1– Adviser Level 2 may be considered depending on experience.

The successful candidate will be engaged under a Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff contract, and other terms and conditions of employment are governed by the ACT Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff Enterprise Agreement 2023-2026.  It is not an ACT Public Service position.
