Budget backs local community’s vision for Gungahlin

2021-10-05

Greens MLA for Yerrabi Andrew Braddock has today welcomed the ACT Government’s infrastructure investment in Gungahlin, saying it is listening to the community's voice.

The ACT Government has announced funding for the following initiatives:

  • $600,000 for improved and new amenities for Yerrabi Pond District Park
  • $3 million over four years for design and construction of a new Community Recreation Park in Casey
  • $300,000 over two years for a feasibility and design study, including a co-design process to determine a delivery approach for community facilities in Gungahlin
  • Road infrastructure for East Gungahlin High School
  • Refurbishments for the Gungahlin Joint Emergency Service Centre
  • $9 million to progress the Throsby Home of Football.

On the Yerrabi Pond amenities upgrades:

“There has been incredible local advocacy from groups such as ‘Friends of Yerrabi Pond’ to revitalise our parks and green spaces,” said Mr. Braddock, ACT Greens Member for Yerrabi.

“I am really thrilled to see The ACT Government listen to those voices and start investing in upgrading Yerrabi Pond. While we do need more to achieve the community’s vision for Yerrabi Pond, this is a good start.”

On Casey Community Recreation Park:

“Casey needs more green spaces, and these must be developed in consultation with the local community. I have heard residents looking for age-appropriate facilities for older children, given most existing playgrounds in Casey are designed for younger children. It would be great for this development to include a basketball or netball court and help serve surrounding suburbs such as Taylor, Ngunnawal and Nicholls.”

On Gungahlin Community Centre feasibility design:

“The ACT Greens care about listening deeply to communities and facilitating grassroots participatory democracy. We promised a Community Centre for Gungalin at the election and today’s announcement of funding for consultation and design is a step towards achieving that promise. Key questions to be addressed during consultation include the size and functions of the centre, and I look forward to working with the community and Government to help answer these questions.”

On refurbishing the Gungahlin Joint Emergency Service Centre:

“As Gungahlin’s population rapidly expands we need more space for our essential services to operate effectively here in Gungahlin. This is a welcome announcement as the pressures on the existing facility have been building for a number of years.”
