Canberra’s Heritage Festival returns in a new form in 2021

2021-03-18

The 38th annual Canberra and Region Heritage Festival will return next month, celebrating Canberra’s First Nation, natural and built heritage.

Minister for Heritage Rebecca Vassarotti said there will be over 150 events on offer during the festival including guided walks, art making activities, performances and access to some of Canberra’s oldest buildings and landmarks.

“This years Reimagined theme is particularly fitting as we’ve taken a fresh approach to how the festival operates, so that we’re able to keep things running smoothly while remaining COVID-safe,” Minister Vassarotti said.

“The program this year has something for everyone, of all ages and backgrounds. Spread out over Canberra and the surrounding regions, you won’t need to travel too far to find something interesting. We’re extremely lucky to have such varied, unique and rich history right in our backyard.

“This festival is a huge event for the Canberra community, and we’re excited to be able to bring it back this year in a time where many festivals and events have faced uncertainty. Thank you to all of the organisers who have signed up to be part of one of the region’s largest and most inclusive festivals.”

“Our heritage festival events help participants learn more about the rich biodiversity, natural beauty and seasonal cycles of Black Mountain and its plants.

“Participants are also able to reimagine the Ngunnawal and national capital cultures through the stories from Wally Bell, a Ngunnawal elder, and Mark Butz, a history writer, about people and their use of plants from deep time to more recent times.
